French Lick Resort -French Lick, Indiana

On one of my family vacations we were going to stay a night in French Lick, Indiana so that we could visit Larry Bird’s hometown.  We found the French Lick Resort online, and all the pictures looked amazing.  It was supposed to be a resort and spa, which was something different from what we have done in the past.  They had golf and tennis on sight, which having played tennis in high school, I was ready to have my go back on the court.

When we pulled up to the hotel, it was beautiful, something out of an old black and white movie.  There was a welcoming wraparound open porch lined with white rocking chairs.  The lobby was so grand, I felt the hotel was too fancy for me to be staying in, but then the smell of paint overwhelmed me.  They were in the middle of renovations so had scaffolding all over the place.  We decided to give it a try even though we were traveling with three people who had bad asthma.  The grandeur soon faded as we made our way down narrow hallways to our suite.   The room was very large, but we could still smell the paint fumes, not to mention the stains on the carpets and walls.  We felt like we were in the BATES Motel, which would have been ok, if that was what we were trying to that vacation.  Since, we were traveling with kids that have severe asthma we decided that it wasn’t the best idea to stay at the resort for the night.

The staff was very nice and understanding regarding our asthmatic concerns, and she admitted they had to send two painters home for the same reasons within the week.  We were refunded our money and so we made continued our trip to Louisville, Kentucky.

Recommendation:  Based on my experience, and they were in the middle of renovations, I would be willing to go back and check out the hotel again.  I like to give people and places the benefit of doubt and believe that this resort could be just the peaceful and relaxing getaway that one would love to have.  When sitting on the large front porch sitting on the rocking chair, I felt transformed and was ready to take life slow.  I have also learned that this resort’s golf course is on the LPGA Legends Tour.  I also hear that all the rooms have been renovated and updated.  I'd definitely give this hotel another chance to impress me.
